The Women’s World Cup happens every 4 years and is played in the one day international (ODI) format. This is the 13th edition of the tournament that started in England in 1973. 8 teams have participate in the competition since the year 2000 and only 3 teams have ever won it namely; Australia (7), England (4) and New Zealand (1).

Matches will be played across 4 venues in India and 1 in Sri Lanka that will act as a neutral venue where Pakistan will play all its round robin matches.

The eight teams that are competing are hosts: India and Sri Lanka, joined by the reigning champions Australia. England, South Africa, and New Zealand all qualified during the ICC women’s championship. Pakistan and Bangladesh round up the eight who went through a qualification tournament hosted earlier in the year in Lahore.

The teams will play each other once in a round robin format and the top 4 go into the semi finals – so every point, every run and every wicket counts towards the net run rate.

Favourites to win the tournament are current title holders Australia but India, South Africa and England will be out to get hands on the silverware as well. The Australian women have had great series leading up to this doing a clean sweep during The Ashes in January.

The opening match will be on the 30th of September between India and Sri Lanka. If you live in South Africa the time difference is roughly 4 hours so matches will probably start in the early hours of the morning. But all will be worth watching.

The Proteas Women will be looking to make their maiden final and get their hands on their first ICC world cup trophy. I’ll share all their fixtures and full squad once they are released.

This world cup aims to break more records in women’s cricket and i am so excited for it. There’s been a lot of growth in the sport and we will see the best bowlers and batters and breakout stars in this years competition.
